The Boy Scouts of America announced Tuesday that it will be changing its name to “Scouting America” amid controversies.
The name change was announced in Florida during the group’s annual meeting.
“In the next 100 years we want any youth in America to feel very, very welcome to come into our programs,” the Boy Scouts president Roger Krone said in an interview, according to CNN.
Over the past few years, the organization has let girls and LGBTQ youth join its ranks.
In 2021 there were almost 1,000 women in the inaugural class of female Eagle Scouts.
The organization filed for bankruptcy in 2020 after decades of sexual-abuse claims and several states passing laws allowing accusers to sue over the decades-old abuse allegations.
The Boy Scouts of America spent over $150 million to settle hundreds of abuse lawsuits between the years of 2017 and 2019.
